Charge Up Detroit Site
About This Site
Charge up Detroit’s project site was chosen by residents who live on Clark, Scotten, Brandon, and Toledo Streets. Speeding cars, traffic violence, and living on a high-injury network on a small intersection in Southwest Detroit were the inspiration for conversations with neighbors. Those conversations created the North Toledo Block Club. Neighbors bonded over common concerns like air quality and transportation, identified available vacant lots, and imagined a solution.
2026 Wins
Paving The Way
We're proud to announce the installation of the new Charge Up Detroit walking path, a major step forward for safer, greener connections in Southwest Detroit. This advancement was made possible through true community partnership: donors, resident volunteers (including the eight-member Nuñez Family, Usef Julien, and Junior Fernandez‑Murillo), and industrial partners Edw. C. Levy Co., Sunbelt Rentals, and VIP Logistics all came together to build this path. Charge Up Detroit is moving full speed ahead, and we couldn't do it without you.
Raising The Roof
This February, we installed a steel pavilion, which serves as a three season community gathering space. The pavilion is used for garden activities, block club meetings, and houses our youth employment program. With funding from Greenlining the Block and constructed by Midstates Recreation, we’ve begun transforming this site into a true community hub. This pavilion will support a 4.2 kW off-grid solar array, scheduled for installation this summer. Thank you to all our supporters for helping us grow a stronger, greener Southwest Detroit.
2024 Wins
In 2024, the North Toledo Block Club held 14 meetings to purchase, plan, celebrate, and activate these vacant lots. In the fall of 2024, we broke ground on our first rain garden with over 20 block club members volunteering their time, alongside 10 volunteers from Friends of the Rouge Rain Gardens to the Rescue program.
